    This course is designed to help delegates work safely and confidently in a Petrol Filling Station Environment. It focuses on recognising hazards, applying control measures, and following safe working practices to maintain a safe workplace.

    The remote learning course follows the same curriculum as the SPA Petrol Retail Contractors Safety Passport classroom-based course, ensuring delegates receive the same comprehensive training in a flexible, remote learning format.

    By the end of the course, successful delegates will be able to:
    • Demonstrate their understanding through the successful completion of each module assessment
    • Recognise how their actions can influence high standards of Health, Safety and Environmental practice
    • Appreciate the importance of risk assessments and know when updates to generic assessments are needed
    • Identify common hazards specific to the petrol retail sector

    The course is split into two days, covering core safety principles and petrol retail-specific risks.

    Day 1 - SPA (Core) Training

    Day 1 aims to introduce essential Health & Safety topics that apply across the workplace: 
    • Organising for Safety: Aims to outline legal responsibilities, hazard control, and the role of enforcing authorities.  
    • The Workplace: Designed to highlight what contributes to a safe work environment, including hidden hazards, working at height, asbestos, confined spaces, and permit-to-work systems. 
    • Tools, Plant and Machinery: Aims to cover risks from powered and non powered work equipment, energy sources, and workplace transport. 
    • Health: Intended to raise awareness of health risks such as hazardous substances, manual handling, noise, stress, musculoskeletal issues and how to control them.
    • Procedures: Aims to emphasise the importance of procedures, including emergency procedures and first aid.
    • The Environment: Designed to introduce environmental responsibilities, safe storage, waste management and emergency planning

    Day 2 - SPA Petrol Retail

    Day 2 aims to cover two modules focused on a petrol filling station and safe working practices:
    • Hazards on a Petrol Filling Station: This module aims to outline the types of hazards on a petrol filling station including fuel hazards,delivery hazards, customer hazards, contractor hazards, other hazards, along with fuel properties, restricted areas on a petrol forecourt, hazardous zones, zone classification and vapour recovery. 
    • Controlling Work on a Forecourt: This module is intended to introduce safe forecourt management through effective communication, safety method statements, clearance certificates, permits to work and task classification.

    The SPA Petrol Retail Contractors Safety Passport Remote Learning course is intended for all contractors working on petrol filling stations. Delegates who work on, in or around a petrol forecourt, transport fuel or come into contact with dangerous oils or mis-fuelling in your job, will need a passport to be eligible to work on site. This course aims to ensure that everyone on site understands the hazards and safe working practices needed to protect themselves, colleagues and customers. 

    Day 1 Exemption 

    If you've already completed a recognised SPA health and safety course, you may be eligible to apply for an exemption for Day 1 of this course, and attend only the Day 2, petrol specific session. To qualify you must have completed one of the listed courses below and have at least 3 months left on your course certificate when you apply:

    Q1. What is SPA? 
    The Safety Pass Alliance (SPA) provides nationally recognised Safety Passport training across multiple industries, including petrol retail, construction, quarrying, live events, warehousing, facilities management, food & drink, building maintenance plus more. The Safety Pass Alliance aims to help contractors, agency staff, and employees understand health and safety responsibilities, maintain compliance and improve workplace safety.

    Yes, this remote course follows SPA standards for petrol retail, aiming to help delegates meet recognised health and safety requirements. The training is delivered by HSS Training, a SPA approved training provider.

    This course is ideal for petrol forecourt staff, contractors, supervisors and anyone who works on petrol sites and wants to gain their SPA accreditation via remote learning.

    Q7. Are there any entry requirements?
    No formal qualifications or experience are needed, but delegates must have a good understanding of written and spoken English. For additional support, please refer to Q13. Delegates should be at least 16 years old and those with a Day 1 exemption must hold a valid qualification (e.g, IOSH Working Safely, NEBOSH Certificate, or CITB Site Safety course) with at least 3 months remaining.

    How the Training Works 

    Q8. What do I need to take part in the remote course? 
    You'll need an internet connected PC or laptop with a working webcam, microphone/speakers, plus a quiet space with no excessive distractions. Tablets and phones are not permitted. Please ensure Microsoft Teams is installed before your course start date. If you have any questions about your device requirements, please contact us on 0345 605 0006 before your course start date.

    Q9. How does the remote course work? 
    The training is delivered remotely via Microsoft Teams, following the same curriculum and standards as the classroom SPA Petrol Retail Contractors Safety Passport course.

    Assessments & Certification 

    Q10. How is the course assessed? 
    Delegates complete an online multiple-choice test paper at the end of each module, with an 80% pass mark required for each test. Delegates are expected to remain visible on camera at all times to confirm active participation.

    Q11. What does my SPA Passport show? 
    Your SPA Passport is a secure, personalised card, showing your photo, name, unique ID, the course you've completed and expiry date. The details are embedded into the card using a durable printing method, similar to the UK driving licence, and coated to make it tamper proof.

    Q12. What certification will I receive? 
    Successful delegates will receive a SPA Safety Passport photo card, valid for 3 years and is renewed by attending the refresher course - SPA Petrol Retail Contractors Safety Passport (Refresher) Petrol Update.
