    This course is designed to support delegates in carrying out the thorough examination of in-service portable lifting equipment, in line with LOLER 1998, PUWER 1998, and other relevant legislation.

    It aims to help delegates:
    • Identify defective or damaged portable lifting equipment 
    • Understand rejection criteria of defective equipment and how to manage damaged equipment registers
    • Recognise the certification that should accompany lifting equipment 
    • Understand their role and responsibilities as a person involved in lifting equipment inspection
    • Support planned maintenance of portable lifting equipment according to legislation (LOLER 1998)
    • Produce thorough examination reports and certification as per Schedule 1, LOLER 1998
    • Complete both the theory and practical assessments to demonstrate knowledge and reporting skills

    This course aims to provide delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out thorough examinations of lifting equipment accessories. Delegates will work through a combination of classroom-based theory, demonstrations, and hands-on inspections.

    Covers the legal framework and guidance relevant to lifting accessory inspections, including: 
    • Health & Safety at Work Act, PUWER, LOLER 
    • Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (overview) 
    • HSE guidance and best practices

    Portable Lifting Equipment Examination (Theory & Practical):

    Covers inspection techniques for a variety of lifting accessories, including: 
    • Chain Slings, master links and assemblies
    • Wire rope slings, shackles, eyebolts, swivel hoist rings 
    • Manual chain blocks, lever hoists, jacks, beam clamps
    • Rigging screws and man-made webbing slings

    Covers methods for maintaining safety and tracking equipment condition, including:

    Delegates should be at least 18 years old, physically fit, and have a basic understanding of the lifting equipment covered in the syllabus. A good understanding of written and spoken English is also required, please refer to Q13 for additional support. Any health factors affecting participation should be raised before the course.

    The course combines classroom learning with practical inspection exercises. Delegates review lifting legislation, examination methods, and reporting requirements, then apply inspection techniques on a range of lifting accessories in a controlled environment.

    Q8. What should I bring on the day?
    PPE: Delegates must wear comfortable workwear, safety boots, hi-vis vest/jacket, hard-hat (preferably with a chin strap), protective gloves, eye protection, safety footwear, long-sleeve top and trousers (shorts are not permitted). Weather-appropriate clothing may be required for outdoor sessions.
