Ladder and Stepladder Combi - User and Inspection Course FAQs

    About The Ladder Association

Q1. What is The Ladder Association?
The Ladder Association is the UK's leading body for ladder safety, setting standards, providing guidance and supporting safe use and inspection of ladders and stepladders. Falls from height remain the most common workplace injuries, so training aims to help delegates know when to use a ladder, choose the right type and work safely whether at home or work.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q2. Is this course recognised by The Ladder Association?
Yes, this course follows The Ladder Association's guidance and best practice for ladder use and inspection, and aims to help you meet recognised safety standards. The training is delivered by HSS Training, a Ladder Association approved training provider.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

This combined course covers both safe use and correct inspection of portable ladders and stepladders, including single, extension, and multi-purpose ladders. The course content covers how to assess risks, pre-use checks, follow best practice and comply with UK ladder safety standards, combining theory, group exercises and a practical assessment.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q4. How long does the course take to complete?
The course runs for one day and combines both ladder and stepladder user training with inspection training, giving delegates the opportunity to cover both areas in a single day.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

    Who Should Attend

Q5. Who is this course suitable for?
Anyone who uses or inspects ladders and stepladders in the workplace, including maintenance teams, construction operatives, facilities staff and managers responsible for safe ladder use.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q6. Are there any entry requirements?
No formal qualifications or experience are needed, but delegates must have a good understanding of written and spoken English. For additional support, please refer to Q12. _________________________________________________________________________________

    How the Training Works

Q7. What should I bring on the day?
PPE: safety boots, hi-vis vest/jacket, hard-hat (preferably with a chin strap), protective gloves, eye protection, safety footwear, long-sleeve top and trousers (shorts are not permitted). You'll also need valid photo ID (passport, driving license, CSCS card) and your own lunch as this is not provided. Complimentary tea and coffee are available and your trainer can suggest nearby dining options if needed. All course materials are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own notebook and pen. If you need help sourcing PPE,  please call 0345 605 0006 or email training@hss.com.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q8. Is there parking available at the training centre?
Most of our training venues offer free on-site parking, although spaces may be limited. You’ll receive full parking details, including What3Words navigation, in your joining instructions once your booking is confirmed. Alternatively, you can find parking availability and other venue details on our Training Centres information page

    ______________________________________________________________________________

    Assessments & Certification

Q9. How is the course assessed?
You'll complete a short 30-question multiple-choice theory test and a practical assessment covering pre-use checks, carrying, setting up, completing a task and performing a detailed visual inspection of a ladder and stepladder.
    __________________________________________________________________________

Q10. What do the 'Level' and 'Category' mean on my LadderCard?
Every LadderCard shows the level you're trained to use:
    • U = User: trained to safely use ladders and stepladders
    • INSP = Inspector: trained to inspect ladders and stepladders
    • INST = Instructor: trained to deliver Ladder Association courses

The category shows which courses you've completed, e.g Ladders & Stepladders or Steps & Step Stools, so employers know exactly what qualification you have received.
    _________________________________________________________________________________

Q11. What certification will I receive?
Successful delegates who complete both the theory and practical assessment will be awarded a LadderCard and certificate.
    _________________________________________________________________________________
