    This GWO Basic Safety Training - Sea Survival course aims to help delegates develop essential knowledge and practical skills for staying safe in offshore environments.

    Through a combination of theory and practical training, the course aims to help delegates understand how to act safely and take the correct preventive actions in all aspects of offshore operations, including:
    • Moving between shore, installation vessels, and wind turbine generators (WTGs)
    • Operating safely during both normal conditions and emergencies in an offshore wind energy environment

    The GWO Basic Safety Training - Sea Survival course covers a range of essential topics and practical exercises designed to help delegates understand and respond safely in offshore environments. 

    On completion, the course aims to provide delegates with the ability to:
    • Demonstrate the requisite awareness of site organisation and legislation relating to the roles, responsibilities and rules applying to offshore wind farms 
    • Understand the importance of correct clothing and conduct in an offshore wind farm environment 
    • Detect and treat stages of cold shock, hypothermia and drowning in an offshore wind environment 
    • Demonstrate the requisite knowledge and skills to recognise the advantages and limitations of personal LSA and PPE and their correct and safe usage 
    • Demonstrate the requisite knowledge related to GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety Systems) and SAR (Search and Rescue) 
    • Demonstrate the requisite individual and collective skills to enhance the chance of survival in a sea-based emergency at sea 
    • Demonstrate the requisite knowledge to recognise the hazards and risks of transfer, take the correct preventative measures into account and use the available LSA and PPE in a correct and safe manner 
    • Demonstrate the requisite knowledge to ensure safe conduct on installations, vessels and WTGs during normal operations and in case of emergencies and evacuation 
    • Demonstrate the requisite skills to conduct safe transfer of themselves and equipment between dock and vessel, and WTG and vessel 
    • Acquire the requisite skills to assist in Man Overboard (MOB) situations

    Q2. What does the GWO BST Sea Survival course cover? 
    This course is aimed at helping delegates understand basic survival skills at sea. It combines theory and practical exercises on safe behaviour, emergency procedures, and using personal survival equipment offshore.

    Q3. How long does the course take to complete?
    The course runs for one day, combining classroom theory and practical exercises to provide a rounded introduction to sea survival.

    Who Should Attend 

    Q4. Who is this course suitable for? 
    This course is aimed at offshore wind operatives who travel between shore, vessels, and wind turbine generators (WTGs). Roles include technicians, engineers, riggers, site operatives, supervisors, and support staff involved in installation, maintenance, or emergency response. This course is also considered essential for anyone working in the wind turbine industry. 

    • For delegates looking to renew their GWO qualification, we also offer the GWO Basic Safety Training Refresher (BSTR) Package.
    • Delegates looking to gain knowledge and practical skills in working at height and manual handling may wish to consider the GWO Working at Height & Manual Handling Combined course.

    Q5. Are there any entry requirements?
    Delegates must register on the GWO WINDA database via the Global Wind Safety website before attending. No formal qualifications or experience are needed, but delegates should be at least 16, in good health, and physically fit to take part in practical activities, with a good understanding of written and spoken English.

    How the Training Works 

    Q6. What should I bring on the day? 
    Delegates should bring swim shorts, a towel and their GWO Winda ID. Please wear suitable clothing for practical exercises. All other materials/resources are provided.

    Q7. Is there parking available at the training centre? 
    Most of our training venues offer free on-site parking, although spaces may be limited. You’ll receive full parking details, including What3Words navigation, in your joining instructions once your booking is confirmed. Alternatively, you can find parking availability and other venue details on our Training Centres information page

    Assessments & Certification

    Assessment is based on participation in practical exercises and theory discussions.

    Successful delegates who complete both the theory and practical assessment will be awarded a GWO BST Sea Survival certificate, valid for two years.
